Akvaforsk Genetics advising Abalone breeding program in South Africa

Dr. Jørn Thodesen and Prof. Terje Refstie from Akvaforsk Genetics visited ABAGEN (a consortium of four Abalone producers in Hermanus; Abagold Ltd., Aqunion Ltd., HIK Ltd. and Irvin & Johnson Ltd.) near Cape Town, South Africa, during August 27-30. The purpose of the visit was to learn more about the ongoing breeding program for Abalone and to discuss how the program can be further developed. Our host was Mr. Michael Joubert, the coordinator of the breeding program, who arranged for us to visit all production sites and have interesting talks with both senior and technical personnel. Information gathered during our visit will be presented in a report where we will evaluate the ongoing breeding program for Abalone and discuss how this work can be further developed. Abalone is a very fascinating aquaculture species with a huge potential for genetic improvement. Hopefully, our visit and report will allow further collaboration in the future.
