Akvaforsk Genetics at FENACAM in Natal, Brazil

During the past FENACAM, Sergio Vela Avitúa held the presentation “Genome-wide association studies for survival to Streptococcus iniae and S. agalactiae in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)” where he presented results of the work conducted by Akvaforsk Genetics together with the team of Spring Genetics. The study centered in the use of genomic tools for improve selection to survival to S. iniae and S. agalactiae. The promising results of this research project initiated by Akvaforsk Genetics, we aim to implement these new technologies in the Nile tilapia breeding program of Spring Genetics with the aim of pass from family selection to individual selection for both traits which cause serious lost for tilapia producers. With this transition we look to increase genetic gain for both traits which should translate in better survival of fish when exposed to these pathogens.”
