Carlos Lozano, PhD

Senior Scientific Advisor

Carlos Lozano has been working in Akvaforsk Genetics since 2005. He is a project leader and works closely with customers and estimates breeding values for Atlantic salmon and tilapia. Additionally, he provides advisory regarding technical operations carried out in the breeding programs. Carlos is actively involved in Akvaforsk Genetics’ R&D projects. Currently he is studying resistance to Streptococcus in tilapia. This project is a collaboration between Spring Genetics and Aquatic Animal Health Research Unit.

Lozano has doctorate in Animal Breeding and Genetics from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences at Ås. In his PhD thesis he studied male proportion in Nile tilapia and estimated genetic variation of male proportion in eight purebred strain crosses. He estimated heritability for male proportion from a pedigreed population and for hybrid crosses between Nile tilapia and blue tilapia.

Carlos actively participated in the design of breeding programs for shrimp and tilapia and has been worked on a feasibility study of white legged shrimp production in Norway. From 2000 to 2005 he worked in the selective breeding program for white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) carried out in Colombia by CENIACUA under the advisory of Akvaforsk Genetics. In that time, he worked planning and executing activities such as growth test, challenge tests, gathering all data required for analysis and setting up groups for dissemination of improved larvae to commercial users.

Carlos Lozano has authored and co-authored scientific research articles in the aquaculture field.
