Sergio Vela Avitúa, MSc, DVM

Senior Scientific Advisor

Sergio Vela Avitúa has been working in Akvaforsk Genetics since 2014. He provides support to our clients and team in the use of genomic information for breeding programs and collaborate in different R&D projects, among them genomic selection in aquaculture breeding programs and resistance to Streptococcus in tilapia. From his work at Akvaforsk Genetics he expresses that it gives him the chance to bring the learned skills together into an applied work in aquaculture from where to have a positive impact into people’s life and our environment.

After finishing his bachelor in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, Sergio studied a Master in Sciences and Genetics. Currently, he is a PhD fellow in Animal Breeding and Genetics at Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

His previous experience includes collaborating with breeding programs in shrimp; molecular biology in shrimp, salamanders and frogs; population genetics in shrimp and in the area of computer programing and database management. Also he has experience as assistant professor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics (UNAM, México) and as editorial advisor for a magazine with specialized content for veterinarians.
